In-office care

In-office visits – quick, convenient, and supportive care for an abortion procedure

Our in-office procedures are safe, simple, and the appointment lasts 90 minutes or less. You’ll meet with a supportive provider, have a chance to ask questions, and receive expert care in a private, judgment-free setting.

The procedure itself takes only a few minutes, and you’ll leave the clinic no longer pregnant — with the peace of mind that you’re in good hands.

  • Safe and effective: Our specialized medical team provides abortion care as early as 28 days after your last period—even when other providers may ask you to wait.

  • Simple and private: The procedure is performed in a calm, quiet exam room, not a hospital or surgical setting.

  • Quick and convenient: The abortion itself takes just 2-7 minutes, similar to a pap test.

  • Financial assistance available: Qualifying Medicaid and insurance accepted.

What to expect during your in-office procedure

At carafem, we offer a gentle, in-office abortion procedure called aspiration abortion (MVA) — available at our health centers in Atlanta, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.

Here’s what to expect:

Before your procedure:

  • You’ll meet with a licensed provider in a private, comfortable room.

  • We’ll review your medical history and perform a quick ultrasound.

  • You’ll have time to ask questions and discuss birth control options, if desired.

  • STI testing is available if you haven’t been tested recently.

During the procedure:

  • You’ll receive numbing medication for your cervix and a non-opioid pain reliever.

  • The procedure takes about 2–7 minutes and uses a quiet, handheld device.

  • Most people feel 1–2 minutes of strong cramping, similar to a heavy period.

  • We can offer anti-anxiety medication if needed — just be sure to bring a ride.

After the procedure:

  • You’ll rest in your private room for about 10–15 minutes.

  • Most people feel ready to eat, drink, and return to normal activities the same day.

  • We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions and 24/7 support if you need us.

Our compassionate, expert clinical team provides abortion care as early as 28 days after your last period—even when other providers may ask you to wait. We follow an evidence-based protocol preferred by the National Abortion Federation, allowing us to offer timely care without unnecessary delays. The procedure is safe and effective from 4 to 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Both are safe and effective options — and the best choice depends on what feels right for you.

The abortion pill (also called medication abortion) uses two FDA-approved medications to end a pregnancy and is typically available up to 12 weeks. You’ll take the first pill in a health center or at home, and the second at home within 0–72 hours. Cramping and bleeding usually begin a few hours after the second medication and feel similar to a heavy period. Many people like this option because it allows them to have their abortion in the privacy of their own space, on their own schedule.

A procedural abortion (sometimes called an in-office or aspiration abortion) takes place in a carafem health center with a supportive, licensed provider. The procedure itself takes about 5 minutes -- similar to the same amount of time as a pap test. Your provider uses a quiet, handheld suction device to gently empty the uterus—like releasing your period all at once. The full visit typically lasts under 90 minutes, depending on your needs. One key difference: with a procedure, you’ll leave the office no longer pregnant.
